German police have arrested two Belarusian nationals suspected of planning acts of sabotage in southern Germany, the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office announced. Meanwhile, German magazine Der Spiegel reported that the suspects were suspected of acting on behalf of Russia.
According to the prosecutor's office, the two men are suspected of planning to set fire to a building or critical infrastructure facility in the Nuremberg area. The prosecutor's office confirmed this information to the Reuters news agency.
The suspects, aged 39 and 50, are suspected of acting on behalf of a foreign government or organization for payment. However, the prosecution has not disclosed which country or organization they are suspected of working for.
The two men have been in custody since October 7, while investigations into the case are ongoing.
The case comes at a time when Germany and other European countries have repeatedly raised concerns about potential sabotage threats and suspected influence operations linked to Russia.
