The European Democratic Party has issued an urgent statement regarding the situation in Serbia, warning of the risk of possible clashes this evening, when the first projections of the results of the parliamentary elections are expected to be published.
The statement said the party had received repeated warnings that individuals affiliated with Aleksandar Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) could mobilize to provoke clashes around 21:00 p.m.
"We are receiving repeated warnings that individuals affiliated with Aleksandar Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) may mobilize to provoke clashes around 21:00 PM tonight, when the first election projections are released," the statement said.
The European Democrats have emphasized that students in Serbia are demanding free and peaceful elections, as well as an outcome determined through the vote of the citizens.
According to them, high turnout in the elections could increase the risk of deliberate provocations.
"The higher the turnout, the greater Vučić's fear of losing and the greater the risk of deliberate provocations," the reaction states.
In the statement, EDP accuses the Serbian president and his government of allowing the creation of a climate of intimidation and violence, demanding that the authorities take responsibility for preventing any further escalation.
"Vucic and his government have allowed a climate of intimidation and violence to grow. They bear full political responsibility for preventing any further escalation. If groups affiliated with the SNS mobilize to cause clashes, Vucic must be held accountable," the statement said.
The European Democratic Party has also called for immediate intervention by security institutions to guarantee the protection of voters, candidates, students and election observers.
"We demand immediate police protection for voters, candidates, students and observers. The future of Serbia should be decided by votes, never by violence," the statement concludes.
