Nikola Camaj, MP of the Albanian Forum and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro, has stated that the request for guaranteed mandates for Albanian parties is not related to the conditioning of constitutional amendments or the adoption of laws related to the country's European integration.
In an interview with Radio Television of Montenegro, Camaj said that he will work to secure four guaranteed mandates for Albanian parties, describing this as a matter of fair political representation and equality.
He emphasized that minorities in Montenegro have supported the country's independence and membership in NATO unconditionally and that, in the same way, they continue to support membership in the European Union.
"Without any conditions, minorities have supported Montenegro's independence and NATO membership. In the same way, we offer full and unconditional support for Montenegro's membership in the European Union," Camaj declared.
He added that improving the position of minority communities and respecting political agreements should be the responsibility of all parties, including the opposition.
According to Camaj, the issue of guaranteed mandates has been discussed since the formation of the current parliamentary majority.
A special commission was also created for this purpose, where discussions were held on changing the electoral legislation, but the process was interrupted after the opposition left.
Camaj assessed that the current electoral legislation does not ensure sufficiently fair representation and that its effects are particularly unfavorable for Albanians in Montenegro.
He emphasized that the request for four guaranteed mandates should not be seen as a tool for political bargaining, but as an effort to ensure fairer representation of Albanians in the country's institutions.
According to him, European integration must be accompanied by the sustainable implementation of the rights of minority communities and the creation of equal opportunities for all citizens.
