Russian media manipulates Prekaz, through disinformation they attempt to distort the facts about the crimes against the Jashari family

The Serbian disinformation campaign on Monday did not escape the announcement by the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office that it will file an indictment for the crimes against the Jashari family. This media outlet went so far as to publish a text with the title "The hunt for Serbs continues: Pristina files an indictment for the 'murder' of Adem Jashari", writes The Geopost.

The Sputnik portal article misinforms about the events in Prekaz and, through selective selection of information and presentation of unconfirmed claims, attempts to contest the announced indictment of the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office for the events in Lower Prekaz in March 1998.

During the last war in Kosovo, in the Jashari neighborhood in Prekaz, 55 people were killed, 22 of whom were close relatives of the legendary commander Adem Jashari, who had long been a target of the Serbian state. Meanwhile, Sputnik has put the word "murder" in quotation marks, trying to misinform the facts.

Analyze:

Claim 1: “The hunt against Serbs continues: Pristina files indictment for the 'murder' of Adem Jashari“

Analysis and denial:

"Sputnik" claims that the announced indictment constitutes a continuation of the "hunt against Serbs", presenting the trial as an ethnically motivated persecution against the Serbian people.

There is no evidence that the Kosovo Special Prosecution is conducting a "hunt" against any people. The investigations relate to war crimes and individual criminal responsibility.

The phrase “The hunt for Serbs continues” is also an emotional and accusatory phrase. It does not present a verifiable fact, but a political interpretation, suggesting that there is a systematic campaign against Serbs. Thus, the reader is guided towards a certain conclusion from the title.

Claim 2: The word "murder" of Adem Jashari placed in quotation marks

Analysis and denial: Placing the word “murder” in quotation marks is not neutral and, the focus on the procedural notice of indictment is used to distort the events in Prekaz and to diminish the importance of the charges related to the deaths of dozens of members of the Jashari family.

This technique is often used in propaganda to cast doubt on a documented event or to relativize responsibility for it.

The operation by Serbian forces in Lower Prekaz on March 5-7, 1998, resulted in the killing of dozens of members of the Jashari family, including women, children, and the elderly. Human Rights Watch documented that among the victims were 13 women and 8 children, which has been documented in reports by international organizations.

Similarly, subsequent international documentation and materials used in the Hague Tribunal proceedings treat the attack in Prekaz as one of the key events of the conflict in Kosovo, where almost 60 members of the Jashari family were killed.

During the operation in Lower Prekaz in 1998, dozens of members of the Jashari family were killed,

Claim 3: "He mercilessly forced his relatives to fight…” as well as the claim that he allegedly “created human shields with women and children to buy time…”

Analysis and denial: In professional journalism, such a claim cannot be presented as fact without documents, verified evidence, or court decisions supporting it.

Reports of Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and in the documentation used by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), there is no verified finding that Adem Jashari used civilians as human shields.

Likewise, no international judgment and no known report by international human rights organizations has confirmed this claim.

Instead of verified evidence, this claim is usually presented in official Serbian narratives and in media outlets that rely on those narratives. The lack of independent evidence makes the claim unconfirmed.

Claim 4: "he killed his nephew out of fear"

Analysis and denial:

The claim that Adem Jashari killed one of his nephews “out of fear” is one of the most serious accusations circulating in some Serbian propaganda narratives.

This claim appears in some wartime narratives and in some media, but has not been confirmed by independent international sources or by trials before international tribunals.

That is, there is no report of Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, OSCE or any other recognized international organization that confirms this claim.

Likewise, there is no judgment of the Hague Tribunal or any other international court that establishes that such an event occurred.

In the absence of court documents, verified evidence, or independent investigations supporting this accusation, presenting it as fact constitutes disinformation or, at the very least, presenting an unconfirmed claim as truth.

cONcluSiON

Analysis of the text published by the Sputnik portal clearly shows that this medium does not report objectively on judicial proceedings, but uses hybrid disinformation methodologies and political framing.

The article contains some typical elements of propaganda and disinformation, not necessarily, as the events are presented selectively, with emotional language and without the necessary context.

Also, in the aforementioned article, "Sputnik" presents only the version of Serbian institutions regarding the events of March 1998.

It is not mentioned: it does not mention the facts – that the operation in Prekaz resulted in the killing of dozens of members of the Jashari family; that women, children and the elderly were killed; that the event is considered a massacre; that the event has been the subject of international analysis and reports.

Ultimately, in a case like this – when only one side of the story is presented, we are dealing with manipulation through the selection of information.

This reminds us once again that "Sputnik" functions as a platform for the rewriting of historical events and the spread of propaganda, where legal processes are used to create political narratives, ignoring official documents and reports from international institutions.
