British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the allocation of 300 million euros to Ukraine, which will help deliver 16 Swedish Gripen E fighter jets.
The decision was announced during Keir Starmer's visit to Kiev. The funds are also intended to help train the pilots and engineers needed to operate the aircraft.
The funding aims to put the aircraft into service no later than 2029. Gripen aircraft are capable of air-to-air combat, ground strike and reconnaissance missions. They have low maintenance requirements and can be operated by small ground crews, making them suitable for Ukraine's operational needs, reports Defence24.
According to the UK government press release, the construction of Gripen aircraft will support 5,000 highly skilled jobs in more than 50 UK-based companies which supply the global Gripen programme.
Starmer pledged that the UK will continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression with a wide range of military equipment.
The prime minister has already pledged to deliver 150,000 drones and thousands of air defense missiles to Ukraine this year.
The allocation of funds for Gripen was also probably one of Starmer's last decisions regarding Ukraine, as he has already announced his resignation on June 22. The Prime Minister is said to arrive at Buckingham Palace on July 20, where he will formally resign before King Charles.
