Poland and Germany join forces to reinforce NATO's eastern border with Russia

Polish and German soldiers have begun joint work to reinforce Poland's eastern border with Russia, as part of efforts to increase the defense capabilities of NATO's eastern flank.

The news was announced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who announced through a post on the X platform that the armed forces of both countries have engaged in joint operations along the border line.

Tusk described this cooperation as an example of close coordination between NATO allies, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and military cooperation at a time when security on the Alliance's eastern flank remains a strategic priority.

"Polish and German soldiers are working together to strengthen our eastern border," Tusk wrote, praising the two countries' joint commitment to increasing regional security.

The operation is part of the long-term Polish program East Shield (Tarcza Wschód), an initiative aimed at building and modernizing defense infrastructure along Poland's eastern borders. The project includes building fortifications, installing advanced surveillance systems, improving military infrastructure, and creating defensive barriers to increase deterrence against potential threats.

In a video released by Polish authorities, a German soldier has stated that the mission of Berlin's troops in Poland is directly related to strengthening NATO's eastern flank.

"We are here to support and strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance," he said, adding that German troops are deployed on Polish territory as part of an organized rotational presence.

Meanwhile, a Polish soldier has announced that the units involved in the operation are performing engineering tasks, while at the same time exchanging operational experiences and practices with their German colleagues.

According to him, cooperation between the two armies is not limited to the construction of defensive structures, but also serves to increase the interoperability and readiness of allied forces.

The joint engagement follows a new defense cooperation agreement signed between Poland and Germany in June. The agreement provides for greater military coordination between the two countries, including participation in the East Shield program, as well as measures to facilitate the movement of allied troops and equipment on Polish territory.

For Warsaw, strengthening the eastern borders has become one of the top defense policy priorities after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Poland, which shares a border with the Russian region of Kaliningrad and Moscow-allied Belarus, has significantly increased defense investment and has sought a greater NATO presence on the Alliance's eastern flank.

Polish-German cooperation is seen as part of NATO's broader efforts to guarantee collective defense and increase military readiness on Europe's eastern borders.
