European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has stated that Serbia will find it very difficult to progress towards membership in the European Union if it does not align its foreign and security policy with that of the EU, including its stance towards Russia and the war in Ukraine.
Responding to the question of whether Serbia could join the EU without imposing sanctions on Russia, Kos stressed that non-compliance with European positions on strategic issues would constitute an obstacle to the country's progress.
"A country that does not align with us on issues of strategic interest, such as foreign and security policy, including the joint fight against Russia, especially in the context of Russian aggression in Ukraine, will not be able to progress. That will be very, very difficult," she declared.
However, she announced that the European Union has not yet started talks with the new Serbian government.
According to her, the new government must first be formed in Belgrade, after which it will be assessed whether and how cooperation with Serbia can continue in this regard.
Otherwise, the student-supported list has won the parliamentary elections in Serbia, defeating the political bloc of former president Aleksandar Vučić.
According to preliminary results, the student list secured 52,71 percent of the votes, while Vučić's coalition secured 39,17 percent.
