Poland, one of the main supporters of neighboring Ukraine in the war against Russia, announced on Thursday the arrest of six people suspected of spying for Moscow and supplying the Russian army with military equipment and components.
Among those arrested are five Polish citizens, aged between 25 and 52, as well as a 37-year-old Russian citizen. This was announced on the social network X by the coordinator of Poland's special services, Tomasz Siemoniak.
Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) announced that four suspects, including the Russian citizen, have been charged with espionage and sent to detention for three months.
"According to suspicions, the group has illegally supplied Russian structures with significant quantities of components for military use, which serve in particular in the production of ammunition and weapons systems," the agency said in a statement.
The six individuals are also suspected of violating rules governing international trade in goods and technologies of strategic importance to national defense and international security.
According to the investigation's findings, the criminal scheme operated from June 2023 to December 2025. The group's activities extended to Poland, Lithuania and Russia, while its members were involved in ordering and purchasing goods, organizing their collection and transporting them across the border to the Russian region of Kaliningrad.
The suspects used vehicles equipped with hidden compartments to transport the equipment. They crossed the Polish-Russian border on several occasions, but some of the goods were stopped by Polish border authorities.
Among the illegally traded products were ammunition components, including artillery shells and shells.
According to the prosecution, the total value of the components purchased and transported to Russia exceeds two million Polish zlotys, or about 455 thousand euros.
In addition to espionage charges, four of the suspects are also accused of acting in the interests of Russian intelligence services against the Republic of Poland.
The Homeland Security Agency is continuing its investigations to determine the full extent of the group's activities.
Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, is located on the Alliance's eastern flank and has repeatedly accused Russia of acts of sabotage since its full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Polish territory is also the main corridor for transporting Western military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Polish authorities had prevented a possible provocation overnight on the border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
According to Siemoniak, since January 1, 2024, as part of ABW's investigations into espionage and sabotage, charges have been filed against nearly 100 people.
