NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Partnerships, Kevin Hamilton, has stated that the North Atlantic alliance is noticing efforts by external actors, especially Russia, to destabilize Kosovo and the region through disinformation and hybrid operations.
During a meeting with journalists in Pristina, Hamilton was asked whether NATO sees attempts at destabilization in the Western Balkans through disinformation campaigns and hybrid attacks.
"In short, yes, unfortunately. We see external actors, and I will mention Russia mainly, involved in disinformation campaigns and hybrid activities, not only here in the Western Balkans, but also around the world," he stated.
Hamilton stressed that it is important for citizens to be aware of cyber threats and manipulation through disinformation.
According to him, societies must build resilience to hybrid attacks, including recognizing phishing attacks, cyberattacks, and disinformation content that aims to destabilize institutions and society.
"There needs to be some kind of whole-of-society resilience doctrine — that citizens are knowledgeable about cybersecurity and recognize disinformation for what it is," Hamilton said.
He announced that NATO is cooperating with Kosovo to strengthen capacities and resistance to hybrid threats.
"NATO is working with Kosovo to build this resilience and this is something we will continue to do across the region and beyond," Hamilton declared.
