Kosovo marked the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide with a ceremony dedicated to the victims of the 1995 massacre, conveying messages of preserving historical truth, justice and opposing genocide denial.
This day has been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the international day of remembrance for the victims of Srebrenica.
The event was organized by the former Deputy Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly, Emilja Rexhepi, who described the Srebrenica genocide as one of the worst crimes committed in Europe after World War II. She emphasized that this tragedy cannot be relativized or forgotten and that its denial continues even after three decades. A documentary dedicated to the victims of the massacre was also shown during the ceremony.
In her speech, the acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, expressed Kosovo's solidarity with Bosnia and Herzegovina and the families of the victims, emphasizing that without the truth, there can be no justice and lasting peace. Meanwhile, the message of the acting prime minister, Albin Kurti, was that the denial of the genocide not only violates historical memory, but also endangers the future.
The ceremony was also attended by the deputy of the Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Xhemal Smajić, who said that the commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica shows that the danger remains present whenever crimes are denied and ideologies of hatred and division are not stopped.
Meanwhile, Albanian MP in the Serbian Parliament, Shaip Kamberi, said that resolutions proposed for years in the Serbian Parliament to condemn the genocide in Srebrenica have not even been allowed to be discussed.
The Srebrenica genocide, committed in July 1995, has been recognized by international courts as genocide. Over 8 Bosniak men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces, and July 11 is marked worldwide as a day of remembrance for the victims of this crime.
