The United Nations' International Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) has raised concerns about a lack of cooperation from Serbian institutions regarding a court case involving Vojislav Seselj and several of his associates.
The tenth monitoring report, published on May 21, 2026, notes that the Serbian authorities have not responded to the official requests of the case monitor, Dagmara Albrecht, regarding the status of the procedure for months.
According to the IRMCT, the case has been transferred to Serbia for prosecution in 2024, but the process has not advanced due to the lack of a "prior opinion" from the Serbian Ministry of Justice, writes klix.ba.
The case involves Vojislav Seselj, Miljan Damjanović, Miroljub Ignjatović, Ljiljana Mihajlović and Ognjen Mihajlović, who are accused of contempt of court, including publishing confidential information and the identity of protected witnesses in Hague Tribunal proceedings.
The report states that the monitor sent several official requests by email to the Serbian Ministry of Justice and the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office, but received no response. She also recalls that during a meeting in November 2025, Serbian authorities had promised to provide information, but this did not happen.
Due to the lack of institutional cooperation, IRMCT announces that a new monitoring visit to Belgrade is being planned, with the aim of discussing the impasse and the status of the case.
According to the Mechanism, the case remains blocked since the end of 2024, while the preliminary decision of the Serbian authorities to enable the initiation of the judicial procedure is still awaited.
IRMCT emphasizes that monitoring will continue until the process is unblocked and effective follow-up of the case is ensured at the national level.
