US Congressman Joe Wilson has distributed a letter addressed to him by Serbian citizens and representatives of the diaspora, who raise concerns about the way voting outside Serbia is organized in the October 25 parliamentary elections.
In his reaction, Wilson linked the issue to developments in Georgia, accusing the Georgian Dream government of obstructing the diaspora's vote and warning that a similar situation should not be repeated in Serbia.
“The anti-American Georgian Dream regime manipulated the Georgian elections by preventing the diaspora from voting. Now the Vucic regime is trying to do the same. This must not be allowed! Serbs deserve free and fair elections!” Wilson wrote.
The letter published by the American congressman states that 106 Serbian citizens have registered to vote abroad, a significant increase compared to 39,270 voters registered in 2023. Meanwhile, the number of polling stations has only increased from 81 to 93.
The document raises concerns about numerous cities where there is a request for voting, but no centers are foreseen. In Europe, Thessaloniki, Florence, Vicenza, Barcelona, Valencia, Graz, Innsbruck, Basel, Geneva, Lugano, Hanover, Karlsruhe and Cologne are mentioned.
In Canada, according to the letter, only Ottawa and Toronto have been approved, while Vancouver and Calgary have been left out, despite the large distances and the fact that Vancouver had a voting center in the 2023 elections.
Even in the United States, the list is limited. The document mentions Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, while Miami and Houston are linked to centers far away.
Concerns also about the voting schedule
One of the main points of the letter is the method of determining voting hours in the diaspora.
According to the document, the application of Serbian time in different time zones means that part of the voting will take place at night. In Los Angeles, for example, the voting period will extend from 23:00 p.m. on October 24 to noon on October 25, local time.
The authors of the letter argue that this creates practical obstacles for citizens who want to vote and demand that the Republican Election Commission review the decision.
They also demand the publication of complete registration data by location, transparent explanations of how polling stations were selected, and the creation of additional centers where long distances make participation difficult.
Wilson, by distributing the letter, has placed the issue of the Serbian diaspora vote in the broader context of the American debate about elections and democratic standards.
The American congressman's message is straightforward: concerns about diaspora access to voting must be addressed and Serbian citizens must be guaranteed the opportunity to participate in the elections.
