The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bečirović, has warned of the danger posed by, according to him, the separatist aspirations of the leadership of Republika Srpska and the glorification of convicted war criminals in Serbia.
In his speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Bečirović said that Bosnia and Herzegovina remains committed to peace, while asking the international community to react to developments that, according to him, endanger the stability of the country and the region.
"Peace must be maintained every day. This requires responsibility from political leaders, respect for the law and a willingness for dialogue," Beçirovic declared.
He emphasized that integration into the European Union and NATO remain strategic objectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bečirović dedicated an important part of his speech to the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, Ratko Mladić, convicted by the Hague Tribunal for genocide and other war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Referring to Mladic's funeral ceremony in Belgrade, Becirovic sharply criticized his honors and glorification.
"Ratko Mladic is not a hero, but a convicted war criminal. The institutional glorification of this war criminal is an anti-civilizational and unacceptable act," he said.
Mladic, who died on August 27th in The Hague while serving a life sentence, was buried on September 7th in Belgrade, in a ceremony attended by family members, former associates, and Serbian political and religious representatives.
Beçirovic has stated that the public honoring of Mladić constitutes, according to him, a worrying signal about the attitude of Serbian institutions towards the war past.
He has called on the United Nations, the European Union and other international actors to condemn and take steps against the glorification of convicted war criminals.
In his speech before the General Assembly, Bečirović also raised concerns about the policies of the Republika Srpska leadership.
According to him, the ideology and policies that led to the war and genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to pose a threat to the country.
"The current leadership of the Bosnian entity Republika Srpska continues to threaten the peace and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region," he stated.
Beçirović said that, in his opinion, efforts to weaken or change the constitutional order established by the Dayton Agreement could create conditions for new attempts to secede from Republika Srpska.
"We must stop such a destructive policy together," he said.
He has also accused the Republika Srpska authorities of exerting pressure on genocide victims and employees of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.
Beçirovic argued that Bosnia and Herzegovina has gone through difficult trials, but that the country, according to him, has not lost its orientation towards a better future.
He also recalled that international courts have established responsibility for the genocide committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina and demanded that these decisions be respected.
In this context, he warned that the glorification of figures convicted of war crimes and tensions surrounding the Dayton Agreement should not be treated as issues of the past, but as developments that could affect the security and stability of the region.
"Peace must be maintained every day," Beçirovic reiterated in his speech at the UN.
