European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has criticized the violence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s regime, stating that the European Union supports partnership, not submission.
In a joint press conference with the Serbian president on Wednesday, von der Leyen said that the European Union’s stance implies freedom, not oppression, including the right to peaceful gathering.
“We support partnership, not submission,” she added, referring to the violence by Serbian authorities against demonstrators in Serbia during numerous protests held over several months in response to the collapse of a railway canopy in November 2024 in Novi Sad, which left 16 people dead.
According to her, the European Union expects a greater degree of alignment in foreign policy, including sanctions against Russia, which Serbia has not imposed, choosing instead to stand by its close ally Vladimir Putin./The Geopost/
