The Dutch authorities have detected and detained a Russian spy of the Russian Military Intelligence (GRU) who through a false Brazilian identity had tried to infiltrate the International Criminal Court in The Hague, reports Metro Newspaper.
The Dutch Intelligence Agency has revealed that the notorious Russian GRU agent Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov had created a false and detailed story of a fake Brazilian identity to be employed at the International Criminal Court investigating war crimes charges in Ukraine, as reported by the American newspaper The Washington Post.
“This was a multi-year operation of the GRU that cost a lot of time, energy and money,” said the Head of the Dutch Intelligence Agency Erik Akerboom to Reuters.
Russia has declined to comment, although the Kremlin has in the past denied allegations of espionage as a smear and defamation campaign against Moscow.
The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service said in a statement that the man posing as Viktor Muller Ferreira had been caught at a Dutch airport.
He was declared by the Dutch authorities as an unwanted foreigner and was placed on the next flight to Brazil, where he is awaiting trial, it was said in a statement.
