The statements of the leader of the Socialist Movement of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, have been seen in Podgorica and the region as part of the continuation of the political rhetoric with which Belgrade is exerting pressure on Montenegro regarding the Kosovo issue.
Vulin has harshly criticized the decision of the Government of Montenegro to recognize the independence of Kosovo, describing it as an action of a "pro-European and anti-Serbian government", and claiming that with this decision Montenegro "has lost its dignity and historical heroism".
He added that the recognition of Kosovo, according to him, does not reflect the will of the Montenegrin people and that it constitutes a departure from the previous political tradition of the state.
Such statements are part of the political narrative from Belgrade, which aims to maintain influence over Podgorica's decision-making on foreign policy issues, especially in relation to Kosovo.
This rhetoric has been seen as a form of diplomatic and political pressure, at a time when Montenegro is trying to consolidate its Euro-Atlantic orientation and relations with the European Union.
