Moscow has faced what Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has described as the largest drone attack on the Russian capital, with authorities claiming hundreds of aircraft were shot down before reaching the city.
According to Sobyanin, Russian air defenses have shot down 450 drones approaching Moscow. He said that since September 19, more than 1,600 drones have been intercepted in various areas of Russia.
However, the mayor admitted that some drones reached the territory of the Moscow Oil Refinery, while another hit a residential building. Sobyanin said there were no casualties.
He also claimed that the attack was aimed at disrupting elections in Russia, but provided no evidence to support this claim.
The Russian Defense Ministry meanwhile stated that overnight alone it had intercepted and destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones over various regions of Russia, occupied Crimea, and the waters of the Black Sea.
The Russian figures and claims have not been independently verified. Drone attacks on Russian territory have intensified in recent times, while Moscow and Kiev continue to exchange airstrikes.
