The Ukrainian military carried out large-scale attacks on several Russian regions on the night of June 6, reaching up to 1.000 kilometers deep into Russian territory and hitting several targets, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The attack comes ahead of the final day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the annual event in the former hometown of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as concerns grow about the security of major Russian cities.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian drones flew about 1,000 kilometers and targeted Russian arsenals and naval bases in the historic port city of Kronstadt near St. Petersburg. The drones also hit an oil depot in Krasnodar Krai, about 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, he added.
"It's time to end this war. But the ruler of Russia wants to keep fighting. That's why Ukrainian sanctions against this aggression are working," Zelensky said on social media.
Local residents reported seeing clouds of smoke rising from the area around the Kronstadt Naval Plant — a Russian shipyard located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from St. Petersburg, Russian media channels Telegram reported.
Photos and videos posted on social media show drones flying over the city before the attack, KyivPost reports.
Following the reported attacks, all entry and exit from Kronstadt were briefly halted, local transport officials announced.
Russia's Defense Ministry reported that its air defense systems shot down 376 drones overnight on June 6, including more than 140 over Leningrad Oblast.
Alexander Drozdenko, the governor of Leningrad Oblast, said a fire broke out in a building belonging to the Russian Defense Ministry. He added that an evacuation of residents was underway in the Lomonosovsky district of the region.
The latest attack in the region comes just days after Ukrainian forces struck the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal in Russia's Leningrad Oblast in the early hours of June 3. The attack took place as dignitaries arrived for the 2026 Economic Forum.
The reported attacks come amid a wider, large-scale attack on multiple Russian regions, with reported attacks on various oil infrastructure.
Photos and videos posted on social media by local residents claim to show a fire emanating from an oil depot in the city of Ust-Labinsk in Krasnodar Krai.
Later, local authorities reported that the oil depot was attacked by Ukrainian drones. Sixty people were evacuated from nearby homes, according to the statement.
No casualties were reported.
"Russia must end its war and stop attacks on life. Any manifestation of injustice against Ukraine will receive a fair response," Zelensky said.
Port infrastructure was also reportedly hit in besieged Mariupol, with thick black smoke rising over the port in videos posted on social media.
Smoke was also seen coming from a building in Lebyazhye in Leningrad Oblast, although the target was not immediately clear.
Throughout the night, various western Russian and Russian-occupied regions sounded airstrike alerts warning of Ukrainian drones flying overhead. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that 376 drones were shot down over Russia.
Explosions were reported over Uzlovaya in Tula Oblast and Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. Air defense operations were also seen operating near the city of Sochi.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said at least 12 drones were shot down as they approached the Russian capital.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on domestically produced drones to strike targets deep inside Russia, particularly facilities related to oil refining, logistics, and defense production that fuel Russia's war effort.
The latest Ukrainian attacks on Russia come after Putin rejected President Volodymyr Zelensky's open letter on June 5, which called for the immediate reopening of peace negotiations.
