US President Joe Biden has visited US troops stationed in the Polish city near the border with Ukraine, while Moscow has signaled it will focus on fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Biden met with dozens of soldiers during a March 25 visit to Rzeszow, less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from a military base in western Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia on March 13.
Thousands of US troops are stationed in Poland as part of NATO battalions. The country has also housed more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees since Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
Biden traveled to Poland after visiting Brussels, where he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a European bloc agreement with the US on the purchase of liquefied natural gas, with the aim of leaving the EU. Russian gas imports.
Biden, who has met with NATO, EU and G7 leaders, is expected to hold talks with Polish leaders on energy and refugee issues.
Before leaving for Poland, Biden said he hoped his visit would reaffirm the US commitment to helping displaced Ukrainians inside and outside Ukraine.
As a result of the fighting, nearly 4 million civilians have fled Ukraine, while tens of thousands more are stranded in cities surrounded by Russian troops, and are facing water and food shortages.
