The Russian government announced on Monday a ban on jet fuel exports until the end of November, after Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries across the country have led to a drop in domestic production and gasoline shortages in some places.
In a statement, the government tha se The measure was introduced to “ensure stability in the domestic fuel market.” Supplies to countries that have active intergovernmental agreements with Russia will be exempt from the restriction.
The embargo, which expires on November 30, marks the first stop of Russia on jet fuel exports, according to the RBC news agency.
Russian Minister of Transport, Andrei Nikitin, it was said later told reporters that there was no shortage of jet fuel in the country and that the ban was decided "based on the interests of our airlines."
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil infrastructure over the past few months in an attempt to deprive the Kremlin of unexpected energy sources due to the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Refinery strikes have stopped or reduced production at facilities that account for about a quarter of the country's total refining capacity and more than 30% of gasoline production, according to Reuters.
Bloomberg reported that processing volumes at Russian refineries have fallen to 4.69 million barrels per day – the lowest level since 2009.
A total ban on gasoline exports remains in effect across Russia until July 31. Despite this ban, gas stations in annexed Crimea have begun fuel rationing to deal with a local shortage.
Meanwhile, amid the global energy crisis caused by the war with Iran, Britain last month eased sanctions on imports of Russian jet fuel and oil “to protect UK consumers.” This decision followed a waiver of US sanctions on Russian oil shipments that were already at sea.
