Russia has threatened an “uncontrolled escalation of the conflict” if the NATO states send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, reports Reuters.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that such a move would lead to an uncontrolled escalation of the conflict.
She referred to recent statements by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius regarding the possibility of their countries sending peacekeepers to Ukraine.
Starmer pointed out that the UK had discussed the idea of a peacekeeping force with other allies. Pistorius, on the other hand, stated that Germany, as the largest NATO partner in Europe, would “certainly play a role” and that the issue would be discussed at the appropriate time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated that at least 200,000 European peacekeepers would be needed after a possible ceasefire to prevent a new Russian attack.
