Following the fall of his regime in Syria in 2024, former President Bashar al-Assad and his family are reportedly living a luxurious, quiet, and isolated life in Moscow and the United Arab Emirates, according to sources close to the family and leaked information.
Assad, a London-trained ophthalmologist, has resumed his medical studies, taking ophthalmology lessons in the Russian capital. A family friend told media that “he is refining his medical skills, and it is clearly a passion—money is not a concern.”
The Assad family is believed to reside in Moscow’s prestigious Rublyovka area, home to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russia’s political and business elite. Sources say the family is largely cut off from the circles that once supported them, with Bashar maintaining contact only with a few close associates from his former regime.
“It’s a very quiet life,” said a family friend. “He has very little contact with the outside world and is under the supervision of Russian authorities.” Russian Ambassador to Iraq, Elbrus Kutrashev, previously confirmed that Assad is barred from engaging in public or political activities.
Meanwhile, the Assad children are adapting to their new life in Moscow. Zein al-Assad recently graduated with a degree in international relations from the elite MGIMO University, where much of Russia’s ruling class studies, while sons Hafez and Karim live a lavish routine, occasionally traveling to the United Arab Emirates.
Former Syrian First Lady Asma al-Assad, who recovered from leukemia under medical supervision in Moscow, remains central to family life, supporting the transition to their new environment.
Following the regime’s fall, rebels and social media shared images of the Assad family, revealing a more private and humanized side of the former Syrian leader, far removed from the authoritarian figure citizens had known for 14 years.
Security experts and former diplomats note that the family’s isolated life under Russian oversight is intended to minimize risk, keeping them away from scandals and direct conflict with the West or regional neighbors.
