The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, who joined the new Serbian government despite US sanctions, traveled to Russia as expected for a two-day official visit.
There, Vulin was received by the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, who congratulated Vulin on his new role in the Serbian government.
At the meeting with him, Shoigu emphasized that Russia has traditionally supported Belgrade’s course on all difficult issues and will continue to do so.
They discussed “issues of cooperation in the field of security and against Western interference in internal affairs”.
He also met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandar Grushko and thanked him for Russia’s support for Serbia’s denial of the Srebrenica genocide during the vote on the UN resolution.
Vulin’s visit to Russia will last several days and this visit is the first since Vulin’s election as Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia on May 2.
Vulin, who is also sanctioned by the US for his ties to Russia, has been honored by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federal Security Service during his frequent visits there.
He was subsequently honored “for his great contribution to the development and improvement of cooperation between the BIA and Russia’s foreign intelligence service [SVR] in the field of ensuring state security and protecting the national interests of Serbia and Russia”.
Vulin maintained direct contact with Russian officials even after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when he headed the BIA.
Vulin is a longtime partner of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
The US State Department had expressed its disappointment when Vulin was nominated for the post he currently holds./The Geopost/
