Former diplomat Nebojsa Vujovic said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is ready to recognize Kosovo's independence only to stay in power and avoid US sanctions for corruption, election fraud and disregard for the rule of law.
Commenting on Foreign Minister Marko Djuric's visit to Washington, Vujovic told Beta that US Secretary of State Mark Rubio informed the head of Serbian diplomacy about the secret binding agreement on the recognition of Kosovo's independence.
"Đurić was invited to Washington so that Rubio, on behalf of the US government and President Donald Trump, could present him with the secret binding agreement on the recognition of Kosovo's independence. This was the main purpose of Đurić's invitation to Washington. Every day, step by step, Serbia is getting closer to the formalization and official recognition of Kosovo as an independent state," Vujović said.
"By signing a binding agreement on the recognition of Kosovo, Trump would achieve great success, and at the same time would hit the European Union and Russia. On the other hand, this suits Vučić because it would buy time for him to stay in power. Vučić would thus receive tacit approval for the closure of independent media, and the imposition of US sanctions for corruption, electoral fraud and disregard for the rule of law under the Western Balkans Democracy Act, which was approved by the US Congress, would be delayed," the former diplomat emphasized.
Djuric's visit to Washington, Vujovic added, represents a "desperate fight by the regime in Belgrade to get out alive."
“The goal of the Vučić regime is to welcome EXPO to power and reward itself again with abundant money theft. To stay in power, Vučić must accept the American proposal to recognize an independent Kosovo. All he has done so far is dismantle Security Council Resolution 1244 and the recent moves regarding the integration of Serbian education and healthcare into the Kosovo system confirm that Vučić has rejected Kosovo. He believes that Kosovo is no longer on anyone’s agenda in Serbia and that now is the time to finally hand it over. For the Americans, Kosovo is for the sake of staying in power,” Vučović said.
After a several-day visit to Washington, Foreign Minister Marko Djuric stated that Serbia has taken a step forward in its relations with the United States of America and that talks with top American officials have contributed to a greater understanding of Serbia's national priorities.
