After several days of protests, mostly at night, in many cities across Serbia, President Aleksandar Vučić addressed the nation this week, as announced. The speech lasted 52 minutes – not a single minute was devoted to police brutality. He did answer questions – but not those he didn’t like.
Five chairs are urgently needed, the protocol learned a few minutes before the Serbian president’s extraordinary address.
Although he brought the country’s police leadership with him, Vučić spoke alone, first about Putin and Trump, and then, forty minutes in, one of two announcements followed.
“The question of the day is when they will kill someone… Who they have decided to kill tonight… I am only afraid that they will kill someone… They have no choice but to start killing people,” said the president.
The Serbian president’s tactics toward rebellious students and citizens have changed constantly over the past nine months, but one thing has remained constant: intimidation.
“I tell the citizens of Serbia not to be afraid of this frightened man… I saw someone threatening to lose his head in the coming days, which means we have a man who has decided to swap his stick for a gun,” says DS leader Srđan Milivojević.
The president is asking for a few days of rest, admitting that he does not have enough strength for everything that is happening on the streets of Serbia and that, as the second announcement says, “peace and order will prevail.”
“Over the next 3-4 days, it will seem to you that we as a country have retreated and withdrawn… Six, seven days… At some point, you will see Serbia’s determination, we will use everything at our disposal,” Vučić said.
The Serbian parliament declares a state of emergency, which, as he says, is a complicated process for the president, so he will decide on some other measure in 7-8 days.
“I tell Vučić that you don’t have as many bullets as there is freedom in us. Serbia will not be ruled by the one with the most powerful rifle, the strongest sniper, the longest stick, but by the one who dares to stand up in front of everyone and say: ‘I will not give in, this is our country,'” says Milivojević.
Questions were only allowed from pro-regime media, who were not interested in what would happen with police brutality or who and where started the pyrotechnic attacks.
“Srđan Kuvekalović Pink, Kristina Džoković Newsmax Balkans, Kristina Vasić Television Informer. Kristina, please,” was heard at the conference.
“You will see a more serious and stronger, more responsible response from the state… Good luck,” said the president.
N1: There are even more questions, it’s not fair for the police to say anything… You didn’t mention Vrbas.
“Shame on you for everything you do,” replied the president./N1/
