Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will be in China from September 1 to 6 to attend the 80th anniversary celebrations of the end of Japanese occupation. A meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and possibly also with Vladimir Putin is planned. Vučić also mentioned the possibility of Donald Trump’s arrival, although analyst Dragoslav Rašeta doubts this, he told the daily Danas.
Rašeta explains that Vučić uses such events to build his international image and demonstrate close ties with world leaders. However, he stresses that Vučić will have to balance his ties with China and Russia and the current tensions with the West.
During his visit, Vučić will likely seek to accelerate a free trade agreement with China, new Chinese investments, and support on issues related to Kosovo and the Republic of Srpska. Rašeta adds that China wants to show that it has loyal partners in Europe, while Vučić is using Trump’s name to promote his “four-chair” approach to foreign policy.
