Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has once again shown his close political ties with Moscow, after today he held a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Belgrade, Aleksandar Bocan-Kharchenko.
Vučić, in a post on his official Instagram account, announced that during the conversation, "current international developments and security challenges" were discussed, as well as issues of importance to Serbia, especially those related to energy security and sustainable supply.
In practice, this means that Serbia continues to rely heavily on Russia – both for energy and political support – which many see as a weakness, as such dependence leaves Belgrade less room to make independent decisions in international politics.
According to Vučić, the interlocutors assessed that it is "important to maintain open channels of communication and continue pragmatic cooperation in areas of common interest."
However, in practice this means continuing to balance between the West and the Kremlin, a strategy that increasingly places Serbia in an uncomfortable position between European integration and traditional ties with Russia.
