Serbia’s Russia-friendly President Aleksandar Vučić paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Wednesday to attend a summit aimed at strengthening European support for Kiev’s fight against Russian aggression. However, he refused to sign a joint declaration calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow, reports the Washington Post.
Serbia, whose energy supply is almost entirely dependent on Russia, refuses to join Western sanctions against Russia.
It was President Aleksandar Vučić’s first visit to Ukraine since taking office over a decade ago. He took part in a summit between Ukraine and twelve south-eastern European countries in Odessa.
Although he spoke out in favor of Serbia joining the European Union, Vučić maintained close relations with Russia. He ignored the EU’s warnings and took part in the Russian victory parade in Moscow on May 9. EU representatives declared that it was inappropriate for Vučić to stand side by side with President Vladimir Putin in view of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine./,The Geopost/
