Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić used the tragedy in Novi Sad to threaten political opponents. He hinted that after the investigation into the collapse of the train station tent, in which 16 people died, the hour of responsibility would come for those who destroyed Serbia.
Instead of focusing on the concrete causes of the tragedy and institutional responsibility, Vučić used the event for propaganda attacks on government critics. He accused political opponents of destroying the education system and institutions and described the faculties as “pigsties”.
According to Serbian media, Vučić stated that there would also be changes within the government and that “those who govern badly should leave as soon as possible”. Although he did not mention any names, he maintained the usual divisive tone that characterizes his political discourse.
Critics described this appearance as an attempt to ignore the actual responsibility of the state for the tragedy in Novi Sad and to draw attention to populist and divisive rhetoric./The Geopost/
