The situation in Russia has been resolved thanks to the strong reaction of the country’s President Vladimir Putin, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic commented on the attempted rebellion of the Wagner mercenary group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin against the Russian army and official Russia.
Serbia will never support a coup d’état or a military coup in any country, Vucic said in an interview with Pink television.
“Putin managed to complete this with his attitude and personality. All honour to Lukashenko (Alexander, President of Belarus), but Putin finished it yesterday. A lot of damage was done, but it was finished because of Putin’s very strong, decisive reaction”, the Serbian President said.
Vucic added that Russia’s mistake was that the country gave the Wagner group a lot of power, noting that “the more power you give someone, the more they think they can do anything”.
Asked how the weakening of President Vladimir Putin would affect Serbia, Vucic said he could say anything about it, but he would not. He explained that he does not want to have a fan approach when it comes to international relations.
“Russia is at war, China is very strong, it is a wonderful friend of ours, it never conditions us, but do you really think we can survive if we fight the West every day?” said the Serbian President.
Russian President Vladimir Putin survived a direct threat to his power after the leader of Wagner’s mercenary group agreed to end his rebellion against the Russian army
Yevgeny Prigozhin called off his Wagner troops’ march on Moscow late on Saturday night after talks with Putin ally and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
He also agreed to leave Russia and go to Belarus, but the Kremlin announced that it would not punish him or the Wagner troops, and a major security crisis for Russia was averted.
By Sunday morning, Wagner’s troops had withdrawn from Rostov-on-Don, the southern military headquarters of the Russian forces which they had captured on Saturday.
Ukrainian President Zelenski says the mutiny has exposed “complete chaos” in Russia and that “Russian bosses are not in control of anything”.
The leaders of the US, UK and EU continue to monitor the situation closely. Washington was reportedly informed of the plans for a mutiny as early as Wednesday, according to US media./rse/
