After the visit to Kosovo, the American delegation led by the Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Asia Karen Donfried visited Serbia, where she held a meeting with its leader, Aleksandar Vucic. In addition to current geopolitical issues such as Russian aggression in Ukraine, the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia was also discussed at the meeting.
In the brief statement of the Presidency of Serbia after the meeting, only in half a sentence is mentioned what was on the table as the main issue: Serbia’s attitude to the situation in Ukraine, imposing sanctions on Russia
Just like after talks with US senators who also visited some Western Balkan countries last week, but not after a meeting with Donfried, Vucic did not hold a press conference to inform the public more clearly about what was discussed at the meeting and whether he said his position during the meeting with Donfried on the issue of imposing sanctions on Russia.
Neither after talks with US senators, who also visited several Western Balkan countries last week, nor after meeting with Donfried, did Vucic hold a press conference to better inform the public about what was discussed at the meeting and whether he had expressed his position during the meeting with Donfried on the issue of imposing sanctions on Russia.
Also, Donfried did not address the media, which was certainly a request of the hosts.
During talks on dialogue and relations between Kosovo and Serbia, Vucic accused Kosovo officials of failing to comply with the provisions of the Brussels agreement.
“Our side has fulfilled its obligations, while Pristina persistently avoids its implementation. “Even nine years after reaching the Brussels Agreement and the Implementation Plan, the establishment of the Union of Serbian Municipalities has not started,” said Vucic.
According to the announcement of the Presidency of Serbia, Vucic said at the meeting that cooperation in the region is in the interest of Serbia.
“It is of great interest for Serbia to maintain stability in the region, and in this sense, improving good neighborly cooperation and mutual benefit is a fundamental and unchanging starting point of our country’s foreign policy,” Vucic said.
We recall that Donfried after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti said that Kosovo and Serbia should join the dialogue in Brussels with the mediation of the EU because the status quo is unstable and that the current situation of the dialogue suits Russia best.
“Russia wants to destroy all unity and democratic consolidation in the Western Balkans,” Donfried said after meeting with Kurti.
Welcoming the “Open Balkans” initiative and Serbia’s intention to focus economic issues on regional cooperation, the US Assistant Secretary of State stressed that this initiative is an opportunity to further promote the region ‘s investment potential./The Geopost
