The United States of America supports efforts to bring perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice, Daniel Koski, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said on Thursday, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
He stressed that the US remains steadfastly committed to peace, reconciliation and coexistence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to build a future in which such suffering will never be repeated.
He expressed his deepest respect for the victims of Srebrenica and for all those in Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world who stand with them.
“The commemoration of genocide must not only be a remembrance of the past; it is also an affirmation of our common commitment to peace, empathy, dignity and justice; it transforms tragedy into a cause for hope. The United States remains steadfastly committed to peace, reconciliation and living together in Bosnia and Herzegovina to build a future in which such suffering will never be repeated,” said Koski, among others.
In July 1995, the forces of the Army of the Republika Srpska killed some 8000 men and boys in and around Srebrenica in what international and domestic courts have described as genocide.
More than 50 people were sentenced to around 700 years in prison for genocide and other crimes in the Srebrenica area.
So far, 6 665 people have been buried in the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Centre, while approximately 250 genocide victims have been buried in other locations, in accordance with the wishes of the victims’ families.

“The road to healing is long, but you are not alone. We remember the dead. We honour the living. And we continue our commitment to a future based on peace and common humanity,” Koski said, among other things.
Many delegations have announced their arrival for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. A high-level delegation from the US State Department, led by Brandon Hanrahan, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, has also arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
