The United Nations General Assembly today adopted the resolution on the Serbian genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, with 84 votes in favor, 19 against and 68 abstentions. The resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica was presented today at the General Assembly session on “Culture of Peace”. 84 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 19 against and 68 abstained.
The resolution was supported by thirty countries, with Germany and Rwanda as official supporters.
In addition to the proponents, the following countries supported the resolution: Albania, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, USA, North Macedonia, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and Vanuatu, according to the draft resolution. Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, North Macedonia and others voted in favor of the draft resolution. Among others, Serbia, Syria, China, Russia, Belarus, Hungary, Dominica and Cuba voted against.
The resolution declares July 11 as the annual International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide of 1995, condemns unreservedly any denial of the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event, and calls on Member States to preserve the proven facts, including through their education systems [and] development of appropriate programs to prevent the denial and distortion of genocide and its recurrence in the future.
It (the resolution) unreservedly condemns acts that glorify those convicted by international tribunals of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, including those responsible for the Srebrenica genocide, and stresses the importance of completing the process of tracing and identifying the remaining victims of the genocide in Srebrenica and their dignified burial, as well as calls for further prosecution of the perpetrators of the genocide in Srebrenica who have not yet been brought to justice.
The resolution calls on all states to comply fully with their obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and customary international law relating to the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, taking into account the relevant decisions of the International Court of Justice /TheGeopost
