Montenegrin Ambassador to Ukraine Dragica Ponorac has been in Kiev again since Saturday, May 14, the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on May 15.
The ministry thanked the ambassador for her courage to be “among the first diplomats in the region to return to a country that defends the values of Euro-Atlanticism.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on its Twitter account that “Montenegro, along with Ukraine and its people, is defending itself from Russian aggression.”
On May 14, Foreign Minister Ranko Krivokapic met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleb during an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin.
On that occasion, Krivokapic assessed that the war in Ukraine “grew into the biggest security and humanitarian tragedy on European soil since the Second World War” and stated that “Ukraine’s fundamental value system, independence, inviolability of borders, territorial integrity and sovereignty are being defended in Ukraine today.” .
By the way, the first diplomatic activity of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, after taking office on April 28, was a visit to the Ukrainian Embassy in Podgorica. With that move, as he said, he wanted to send clear support of Montenegro to Ukraine.
At the end of April, Montenegro got a new, minority government, led by Dritan Abazovic, who promised to speed up Euro-Atlantic processes.
The previous government, led by Zdravko Krivokapic, was divided over Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Montenegro has joined European Union sanctions against Russia, but the adoption of sanctions and their implementation have been delayed for a long time./RSE
