Syria is the 120th country to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
The news was announced by President Vjosa Osmani.
Syria’s recognition follows recognitions by Sudan and Kenya earlier this year. Osmani said this was not only a recognition of state sovereignty, but also of the sacrifice made by many generations for a life in freedom.
“With the support of His Royal Highness, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, we have today reached an agreement in Riyadh whereby the Syrian Arab Republic recognizes the Republic of Kosovo,” Osmani wrote on Facebook.
“The people of Kosovo and Syria have endured much suffering and sacrifice to achieve freedom. Therefore, this mutual recognition today is not only a sign of state sovereignty, but also a recognition of the sacrifices made by many generations for a life in freedom,” Osmani wrote.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that the decision to recognize Kosovo was based on Syria’s belief in the right of peoples to self-determination and its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Balkans and worldwide.
“This decision is part of Syria’s policy aimed at building bridges of cooperation and openness with friendly countries in a way that preserves common interests and strengthens friendship between peoples,” the ministry said in a statement at X. /The Geopost/
