Students blocking the faculties of the University of Novi Sad are protesting tonight over the beating of four colleagues. The gathering started at 8 p.m. on the campus. At the invitation of the students, they were joined by citizens, as well as motorcyclists who accompanied them on their way to the city centre. Shortly before 9 p.m., the protesters arrived at the Catholic Porte, where the protest continued.
Several thousand people are in the centre of Novi Sad, protesting over the beating of four students at the blockade.
Laze Telečkog Street is full of protesters saying “no party tonight, just noise tonight”. A large number of citizens in Laze Telečkog Street shouted “Whoever does not jump is a Ćaci.” („Ko ne skače, taj je ćaci“).
The students, we have unofficially learnt, have decided to block Laze Telečkog Street until 3am. At the bar where the students were last night, after which they were attacked, the crowd drew a red fist.
On their way to the centre, a column of protesters covered the SNS offices on Stražilovska Street with red paint and eggs.
They also wrote messages such as “Murderers”, “Ćaci in prison” … The students arrived in front of the Serbian National Theatre shortly before 9 pm. They were greeted by the citizens in Freedom Square.
Recall that, according to four students from the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, they were attacked last night by ten men for singing the song “He who does not jump is a ćaci“”. Two tractors follow the column.
The protesting column shouts “He who does not jump is a ćaci” and this banner is also displayed at the head of the column.
As they announced today, they are protesting about last night’s attack on their colleagues.
“Four colleagues from the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education were attacked last night when a group of ten men beat them with belts. As a result, one of our colleagues is awaiting jaw surgery and another has internal bleeding, all of whom have sustained serious injuries,” said the students in the blockade.
They also stated how the attack took place.
“Our colleagues were at an evening gathering, during which they were singing that known to all ‘who does not jump is a ćaci ‘ … then an unknown man approached them and warned them to stop because ‘the SNS scoundrels will come to sort it out’ … they continued singing and shortly afterwards the evening ended. The attack on our colleagues took place at the fountain in the Catholic gate,” the students in the blockade said.
