Millions of videos advancing political agendas are circulating on social media, Jason Steinhauer, Global Fellow at the Wilson Center in the US, said today (Thursday) as he spoke about disinformation on social media at The Geopost’s “Balkan Disinformation Summit”. He referred to the millions of views that videos get on social media that tell stories about history and the past and then influence the formation of public opinion, writes The Geopost.
“Today, there are millions of e-history videos, blogs, memes, podcasts, social media accounts and historically-informed news articles on the Internet competing for our attention, advancing political and commercial agendas and actively reshaping what we know about the past,” he said.
He said that the past is important to the present, so protecting against misinformation comes into play, he said. “They affect how people understand the past, and of course all of us in this room know how important that is.” The ideas of the past shape the present and the future. What we think about the past is important.”/The Geopost/
