Serbia’s Narrative Against Kosovo and Turkey Over Turkish Drones

Serbia has continued its narratives against Kosovo, also utilizing the issue of Turkish drones provided to Kosovo.

The Kosovo Security Force (KSF) received thousands of “Skydagger” kamikaze combat drones from Turkey on October 8. The news was announced by the Government of Kosovo and Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

While Kurti stated that this is of great importance for the protection of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kosovo, political and institutional leaders in Serbia interpreted Kosovo’s supply of drones from Turkey as a destabilization of the region.

Serbia even accused Turkey of “not wanting stability” and “dreaming of the return of the Ottoman Empire.” According to them, the arming of Kosovo is “a threat to peace and the Serbian people.”

It was the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, who claimed in a post on the “X” platform that this is a threatening action against Serbia and the region.

“I am appalled by the behavior of Turkey and the brutal violation of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, as well as the continuous arming of the authorities in Pristina. It is now completely clear that Turkey does not want stability in the Western Balkans and is once again dreaming of the return of the Ottoman Empire. Serbia is a small state, but we have clearly understood the message,” he wrote.

His statement was disseminated in Serbian media outlets that follow Russo-Serbian narratives.

Petar Petković, the director of the “Office for Kosovo” in Serbia, also claimed that this armament does not have defensive or democratic purposes, but rather aims to intimidate and threaten Serbs.

In addition to targeting Turkey, Serbia presented the drone supply to Kosovo as “preparation for war,” fostering an alarming narrative about possible tensions in the region.

On the other hand, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, reacted to these statements by Aleksandar Vučić, emphasizing that Turkey supports Kosovo in maintaining peace and that Kosovo’s actions are defensive in nature.

“On the same day that President Trump praised Turkey and President Erdoğan for their exceptional leadership in promoting global peace and security, Vučić shamelessly attacks Turkey, a state which, as a NATO member state, is helping us preserve peace. We will continue to strengthen ties with NATO allies, modernizing our defensive capabilities based on NATO standards, ensuring peace and stability for our people, and actively contributing to overall security.”

Thus, Serbia’s narratives, which present the drone supply as a violation of Resolution 1244 or as a threat to the region, remain unfounded and are merely a political narrative lacking factual arguments. The objectives of the Kosovo Security Force are defensive and not offensive, as emphasized by the Kosovar authorities.
