The Novosti portal has again attempted to disinform the public by disseminating claims from the Russian secret service about a so-called “Maidan” in Serbia. The article speaks of an attack on students “who want to learn” and a so-called attempt by protesting students to cause chaos in Belgrade.
What Novosti wrote:
“In the square in front of the National Assembly, a group of aggressors attacked the camp of students who want to learn, hitting them with bottles, sticks, and flares – with the visible intention of causing chaos.
Since mid-September, the SVR announced that the European Union and its member states ‘are preparing a colour revolution scenario in Serbia, using student movements and youth as a tool to cause unrest,’” Novosti writes.

Analysis:
In its reporting, Novosti claims that a “group of aggressors” attacked the camp of “students 2.0” (also called “Cacilend”) with bottles and sticks. While the incident in front of the Assembly did in fact happen, reporting by independent media and previous events showed that it was a clash between opposing groups in a politically polarized environment, and not a so-called one-sided terrorist attack as presented in Novosti.

Furthermore, on September 15, Brussels officially rejected the Russian accusations, to which the Novosti portal refers, calling them “Russia’s attempts to spread disinformation and hostile political rhetoric against the EU.” The students started the protests themselves, with demands for accountability for the tragedy and for the resolution of the broader social crisis.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) on September 15, 2025, published a statement accusing the European Union and its member states of preparing a “colour revolution scenario” or “Serbian Maidan” in Serbia, using student movements, non-governmental organizations, and the media, with the aim of installing “Brussels-obedient puppets” in power.
Furthermore, media outlets and organizations for media freedom warn that independent media in Serbia face pressure, while pro-regime tabloids frequently accuse student and citizen protests of foreign manipulation without concrete evidence.
Student and citizen protests in Serbia began after the tragedy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, when 16 people died after a roof collapsed at the railway station. The protests began with demands for political and criminal responsibility, and later expanded into broader social and political demands.
On the other hand, there is also evidence where independent media reported on clashes, in which officials of the Serbian Progressive Party were identified among the provocateurs, hindering the protests and causing violence by posing as students.
