Serbia will take part in the BRICS summit – an organization founded by Russia that aims to compete with the European Union.
Serbia will send Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, who has relations with Russia, to this summit and will come to Kazan (Russia) to participate in the BRICS summit, said advisor to Russian President Yuri Ushakov.
Serbian ministers Bratislav Gasić, Adrijana Mesarović and Nenad Popović will also attend the summit.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that he wanted to confirm his participation to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself.
“I spoke to Putin and that is the only reason why I did not want to make an announcement until I told the person from whom I received the call – President Putin.” It’s an expression of responsibility. We had a meaningful conversation. We talked about the Belgrade liberation celebrations and the gas agreement, and I expect that we will start talking about a long-term agreement,” Vucic said.
Vucic had explained to Putin on the phone that he himself could not go due to “previous plans”. This was announced by Putin’s assistant.
“The two presidents spoke on the phone yesterday. It was agreed that the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, who deals directly with Russian-Serbian bilateral relations and BRICS issues, will attend on behalf of Serbia. “The Serbian president already has other international contacts planned these days, which he can hardly postpone,” Ushakov said at the conference.
Vucic tried to minimize his communication with Putin in Prague, saying that he had not met Putin and had not spoken to him since Russia started the invasion of Ukraine. But this time he boasted that he could talk to Putin.
“I am one of the few leaders in the world who is allowed to talk to President Putin,” Vučić said after the conversation with him.
Vulin had said that Serbia considered membership of the BRICS states to be a real alternative to membership of the European Union.
Russia took over the one-year BRICS presidency on January 1, 2024. The Russian presidency included more than 250 different events, with a BRICS summit in Kazan from October 22-24, 2024 forming the centerpiece. /TheGeopost/
