China has ratified an extradition treaty with Serbia that will allow for the extradition of wanted persons found on the territory of the other country, thereby expanding cooperation between the two countries.
However, the agreement still needs to be approved by the Serbian parliament.
According to Reuters, there are concerns about human rights and the possible use of the treaty for potentially political cases.
The formal approval of the treaty by China’s highest legislative body came a year after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Balkan state, during which 29 documents were signed, including the extradition treaty.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said China has been the largest investor in Serbia since 2020 and has increased its investments 30-fold over the past decade./The Geopost/
