Several thousand students will arrive in Novi Sad during the day, where a large commemorative gathering will be held on Saturday on the occasion of the first anniversary of the collapse of the railway station canopy in which 16 people, including children, died. The tragedy that shook Serbia caused a wave of student and citizen dissatisfaction with the regime, which did not punish those responsible even after a year.
Students from all parts of Serbia, many on foot or by bicycle, are on their way to Novi Sad for days. The students from Novi Pazar covered the longest distance, who started on October 16 and covered almost 400 kilometers. Their arrival tonight is expected by thousands of citizens who have prepared a warm welcome for them along the routes.
As for accommodation, the organizers emphasize that all participants are taken care of. “No one will be left without a roof over their heads. Despite numerous obstructions from the local authorities, we managed to secure enough places,” say the organizers.
The organizers note that along the way they faced obstacles from the local authorities, who, as they claim, denied them a police escort and permits to use public spaces. So in Inđija, about fifty students had to spend the night outdoors, on improvised beds in the center of the city.
Along with the students, tens of thousands of citizens from all over Serbia are expected to arrive in Novi Sad on Saturday, individually or in the organization of opposition parties, non-governmental organizations and civic initiatives. The students emphasized that the gathering will be exclusively commemorative, not protest in nature, without whistles, banners and vuvuzelas.
The commemorative rally will begin on November 1 at 11:52 a.m. in front of the Railway Station, and the gathering of participants will begin at 10 a.m. at 16 locations throughout the city. The end is planned at 20:00.
Despite public pressure and months-long protests by students and citizens, those responsible have not yet been prosecuted. In mid-September, the higher public prosecutor’s office in Novi Sad once again filed an indictment against former transport minister Goran Vesić and 12 other persons, but the court’s confirmation of the indictment is still awaited.
According to the Tanjug agency, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić should address the citizens of Serbia at 5:15 p.m.
