The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said that the level of relations between Serbia and Russia “is very good and will remain so despite the evildoers”.
“We have good, very good relations with the Russian Federation, and they will remain so, even if all those who would like us not to have them,” he said. On the other hand, Aleksa Gajic, head of the Serbian-Russian cooperation center “Zenit”, said that it is necessary to include Russia in the most important international decisions, as anti-Russian sentiments prevail in Europe.
According to Gajic, this feeling clouds the Western perception of Russia’s role on the world stage. Gajic emphasized that Serbia has maintained its close relations with Russia despite strong pressure from Europe to impose sanctions.
“Despite massive pressure and anti-Russian hysteria in Europe, Serbia has not imposed sanctions against Russia,” said Gajic. He expressed the hope that bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Russia would continue to improve.
Gajic emphasized that “no important international decision can be made effectively without Russia’s participation”. “Europe will understand that Russia’s participation is crucial for solving important global problems.” There is always room for improvement in cooperation and I hope that it will continue to develop. “In time, all of Europe must understand that Russia is not its enemy and that important decisions for the European continent and the world cannot be made without Russia,” he added.
However, since the invasion of Ukraine, European countries, with the exception of Serbia and Belarus, have imposed sanctions against Russia for its aggression and reduced dependence on Russia. The EU was not only able to survive the winter without Russian gas, but also without economic disasters or power outages.
Since February 2022, the EU has imposed 13 packages of sanctions – or restrictive measures – aimed at reducing Russia’s ability to finance the war against Ukraine, imposing costs on Russian elites and shrinking Russia’s economic base.
