Russia’s Tatarstan region reports massive Ukrainian drone attack

Russia’s Tatarstan region has been subjected to a massive Ukrainian drone attack on August 12, according to the regional government press service.

This latest Ukrainian attack represents Kyiv’s strategy of striking targets deep inside Russian territory using unmanned aerial vehicles, targeting energy infrastructure and military facilities, TASS reported.

Residents of the city of Almetyevsk in Tatarstan reported hearing air raid sirens and shared videos on social media showing unidentified drones flying overhead, RIA Novosti reported in a secondary report.

Eyewitness footage captured the monotonous sound of sirens signalling approaching danger and possible bombardment. Additional video showed a fixed-wing drone flying relatively low over residential areas whilst making characteristic sounds.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that air defence systems intercepted and shot down 25 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Russian regions between 23:50 local time on August 11 and 03:40 on August 12.

Electronic warfare systems also repelled Ukrainian drone attacks overnight in Stavropol, according to Russian military sources.

“Today the Republic of Tatarstan was subjected to a massive attack by enemy drones,” the regional press service said. “As a result of the attack, there were no deaths or injuries.”

Tatarstan, located approximately 800 kilometres east of Moscow, has been increasingly targeted in long-range Ukrainian drone operations as the conflict continues into its third year.

Russian authorities have reinforced air defence systems across the country’s regions following escalating drone attacks on civilian and military targets throughout 2024 and 2025.
