Six embassies in Kiev, Ukraine, were hit by a missile attack from Russia today, causing extensive material damage. Among the embassies hit were those of Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, several embassies located in the same building were damaged, while spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi called the attack “barbaric”.
“These are the embassies of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal and Montenegro,” Tykhyi said during a press conference. “The windows and doors of the premises were destroyed.”
The foreign ministries of the respective countries have condemned the attack. The Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has called these attacks brutal.
“A series of air strikes by the Russian Federation rocked Kiev on Friday morning, causing extensive damage to several areas in the Ukrainian capital. As a result of these attacks, the external facade and some spaces inside the building of the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Kiev and the embassies of five other countries were partially damaged, putting the lives of diplomatic personnel at risk. Only material damage is reported”, the Albanian Foreign Ministry announced. “The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs condemns these brutal attacks without any hesitation. This senseless act is an attack on the very foundations of international diplomacy. The protection of diplomatic personnel and the inviolability of missions are non-negotiable principles that must be fully respected and implemented”.
The Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade also strongly condemns today’s missile attacks by the Russian army on Kiev.
“There were no injuries among the diplomatic staff during the attack, but material damage was caused to the embassy. The relevant services have carried out an initial inspection of the damage at the scene and work is currently underway to repair it,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.
The Macedonian embassy is one of six embassies, including those of EU member states, located in the building hit by today’s missile attack on critical infrastructure in the Goloseyivskyi district of Kiev.
The attack on Kiev took place early in the morning, killing one person and injuring 12 others. The attack knocked out the heating system for 630 residential buildings, 16 hospitals and 30 schools and kindergartens. The attack damaged 20 multi-storey administrative buildings, as well as the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in central Kiev and the National Linguistic University.
Russia has announced that the attack is a response to a Ukrainian attack on a Russian chemical plant using missiles of American origin and that the targets were the structures of the military industry and the security services of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that it intercepted five short-range ballistic missiles during the attack.
