The United States has told the United Nations it has credible information about plans by Russian forces to create “lists of identified Ukrainians who will be killed or sent to camps” if Russia decides to invade the country.
According to the Washington Post, the letter sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, quotes Russia’s behavior in parts of Ukraine that it has already occupied and says that the latest information suggests that further abuses are being planned, which on first included “targeted killings, abductions / enforced disappearances, unjust detentions and use of torture”.
“We are deeply concerned about the continuing human rights violations by Russia in the already occupied parts of Ukraine, and we have reason to believe that these concerns will multiply in the event of a new military offensive,” it is said on the letter of the US Ambassador to the UN, Bathsheba Nell Crocker.
According to the letter, Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in Ukraine, journalists and other activists would also be targeted.
“In particular, we have credible information indicating that Russian forces are compiling a list of Ukrainians to be killed or sent to camps after the military occupation,” the letter continues.
Crocker said the United States had information that the Russian military would use deadly methods to quell the protests or to suppress “peaceful resistance exercises by the civilian population.”
The United States and other Western officials have accused Russia of plotting to invade Ukraine. Moscow denies any such plans, despite having amassed more than 150,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. / The Geopost /
