Russia banned the operation of the Instagram application for sharing photos.
In a Twitter post, NetBlocks – an organization that monitors cyber security and internet governance – confirmed that real-time data shows that Instagram is restricted in Russia by many providers.
“The popular social network has been banned by [Russian] Internet regulator Roskomnadzor after similar measures were taken against Twitter and Facebook,” NetBlocks said.
The Russian government has announced since Friday that it will impose restrictions on access to Instagram starting March 14.
Russia made the decision after Instagram-owning company Meta decided to temporarily ease its moderation rules and allow users to post anti-Russian messages.
In a statement Friday, Russia said it had begun the process of recognizing Meta as an “extremist organization.”
