The situation at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which has been occupied by Russian forces, is “unstable” and could be dangerous, warned the general director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi.
Recall that Russian forces occupied the entire area, including the nuclear power plant itself, which is the largest in Europe.
Grossi warned that the IAEA has consistently tried to gain access to nuclear power plants, but without success. He added that the nuclear power plant “requires repairs” that “are not yet being realized”.
“The situation is as I described it. This is not sustainable. It’s a flashing red light,” Grossi said.
The head of the IAEA said earlier this week he had discussed the situation in Zaporizhia with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He told him that Ukraine did not want IAEA inspectors to visit the nuclear power plant while it was under the control of a “third party”.
Grossi added that he continues to put pressure on Russian authorities to allow inspectors to visit the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, saying he expects a meeting with Russian officials “soon”, the agencies report.
