Russia, after a hundred days of aggression against Ukraine, has control over 20 percent of the country’s territory, so almost 125 thousand square kilometers are in the hands of Russian forces and the current front line extends for more than 1000 kilometers. This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, addressing the Parliament of Luxembourg, where he stressed that all Russian military formations ready for war are involved in the aggression.
The aggression, which Russian President Vladimir Putin called a ‘special military operation aimed at demilitarizing and denationalizing Ukraine,” began on February 24 with airstrikes across Ukraine.
After capturing Antonov Airport, Russian paratroopers set out to occupy the outskirts of Kiev, with the help of tanks from the direction of Belarus. The fighting with many casualties lasted almost 40 days. Attack by Russian paratroopers on the outskirts of Kiev, Bucha turned into a massacre. After a fierce battle, the Russians also occupied Mariupol, a port city on the Sea of Azov, and a steel mill.
In talks between the Moscow and Kiev delegations on March 29, Russia promised to reduce war operations in the Kiev region. The withdrawal of the Russian army followed and the surrender of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
According to the British Ministry of Defense, after a hundred days of war, Russia took control of most of northern Donetsk, and that city is strategically important for the occupation of the entire eastern region, Lugansk. Western media (BBC) write that “Moscow’s absolute priority is the liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which the Russian Federation has recognized as independent states.”
Russia already controls most of northern Donetsk, where fierce street fighting has continued for days, and after a series of military losses in the first weeks of the war around the Ukrainian capital Kiev and the northeast, Russia has said it will focus in the Luhansk occupation and the Donetsk region, which together make up Donbass.
Western analysts believe Putin expected a light war with weak resistance from Ukraine and international opponents, as was the case in Crimea in 2014, and that he is now certainly disappointed.
Due to the aggression against Ukraine, the West imposed sanctions on Russia and there was an increase in fuel and food prices in countries far from where the conflict is happening.
Ukraine has the support of the West, the United States announced (June 1) that new arms assistance will be $ 700 million.
“We reacted quickly to send a significant amount of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, so that it could fight on the front and be in the strongest possible position at the negotiating table. We are not seeking a war between NATO and Russia,” Biden wrote in an editorial in the New York Times.
Almost seven million people have fled Ukraine
Since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, almost 12 million Ukrainians have left their homes and more than five million of them, mostly women and children, have gone abroad, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He also claims that Russia’s military losses now amount to more than 30,000 – more than the total Soviet casualties during the 1979-89 war in Afghanistan and the two wars in Chechnya in 1994-2000.
According to data released by Russia, more than 1300 of its forces were killed in Ukraine.
According to the United Nations, 4,074 civilians have been killed and about 6.8 million people have fled since the start of the war on February 24th.
