Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, currently Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation since 2020, said that the Washington summit declaration of July 10 mentioned “Ukraine’s irreversible path” to NATO.
He threatened that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would mean its “disappearance” and also threatened NATO.
“For Russia, two ways in which this path ends are acceptable: either Ukraine disappears or NATO disappears. Better still, both,” said Medvedev.
Russia threatens Ukraine over its attempt to join NATO, often emphasizing that Ukraine’s inclusion in the alliance crosses a “red line” and that the European bloc is one of the main causes of Russia’s war with Ukraine.
Medvedev called for “caution if Ukraine accepts Russia’s terms for a ceasefire, including the lifting of its NATO aspirations.”
However, he stated unfoundedly that “accepting the negotiated peace could fuel internal unrest in Ukraine, possibly a coup or the formation of a radical new government, which could reignite hostilities between the two nations while jeopardizing Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
However, Ukraine received strong support from NATO countries at the three-day summit in Washington.
“We fully support Ukraine’s right to make its own security arrangements and decide its own future without outside interference.” Ukraine’s future lies in NATO. “Ukraine is increasingly interoperable and politically integrated into the Alliance,” NATO said in the summit statement.
